A student away at school: where the car and the driver are insured

When a driver moves into a dorm, the policy has two questions to answer: where is the car, and who is driving it?

The car stays home

If the car stays at home and the student only drives it on visits, many policies keep them listed as a household driver. Insurers use different distance cutoffs, so ask.

The car goes to campus

Where the car is mostly kept is called its garaging address. If it moves to campus for most of the year, tell your insurer so the policy shows the right place.

Questions worth asking

  • Does the student remain on my policy while away?
  • What counts as “away” to you, a number of miles or months?
  • What happens if the student brings a car back and forth?

Coverage for borrowed cars

Students often borrow cars from friends and roommates. A person’s own policy may or may not apply, so check before it happens.
