Sharing a car across the household: who is covered?

In many homes the car belongs to the household more than to one person. The policy still names specific people.

Named drivers

A policy lists the people who live in the household and drive the car. This matters more than whose name is on the title.

Permissive use

Many policies extend to someone who borrows your car with your permission. The details and limits vary and some situations are excluded. Read the language on your own policy.

Excluded drivers

Some policies let you formally exclude a driver, often by signing a form. If you do, that person is generally not covered while driving your car.

Plain advice

  • Tell your insurer when someone starts driving regularly.
  • Do not lend a car to anyone who is unlicensed.
  • Keep the insurance card where any driver can find it.
